Chaz, “Since it’s the weekend, how about some more ramblings? Somewhat playing off Chaz’s theme and my prior post critiquing SSBs lack of a long term vision regarding 3G CDMA and Qualcomm, these are some of my thoughts as to what might provide a catalyst for a dramatic Qualcomm share price increase.
Potential events that could dramatically increase Qualcomm’s acceptance by the market forces and result in a quick and dramatic share price increase. Listed in ascending order of potential share price impact, and probably descending order of immediate likelihood.
1. Nokia announces that they will be using Qualcomm chipsets exclusively in all of their CDMA and GSM/GPRS/CDMA phones.
2. AT&T Wireless (or another major U.S. carrier announces they will be using CDMA2000 for their 3G networks rather than WCDMA/UTMS. If it’s AWE, DoCoMo makes the same announcement at the same time.
3. Vodafone (or another European carrier) announces they will be using CDMA2000 for their 3G networks rather than WCDMA/UTMS.
4. An Asian GSM carrier (China Mobile, Hutchinson, etc) announces their intention to switch from WCDMA to CDMA2000 for 3G. 5. Vodafone announces the trialing of GSM1X over one of their networks.
6. Nextel announces the use of CDMA 2000 for their 3G upgrade.
7. PCS and/ or VZN announce that there high speed data networks are in such demand that they will immediately upgrade their networks to 1X EV-DO.
8. The Supreme Court rules in favor of Nextwave and Nextwave immediately announces a business plan to offer nationwide high speed, low cost wireless data services using CDMA2000 1X EV-DO with the capital backing of numerous big name entities such as AOL, Disney, MSN, etc.
9. PCS and/ or VZN announce that their high speed data networks are in such demand that they are seeing a significant amount of crossovers (subscriber switching) from AWE and the other GSM/GPRS carriers.
10. KDDI in Japan announces that their high speed data network is in such demand that they are seeing a significant amount of crossovers (subscriber switching) from DoCoMo and JPhone.
11. China Unicom announces that it will only be selling handsets utilizing Qualcomm’s MSM6300 chipset (world phone GSM/GPRS-CDMA2000 1X) as they want to prepare for eventual conversion of their GSM network to GSM1X.
12. Vodafone announces they will be selling Qualcomm’s MSM6300 chipset (world phone GSM/GPRS-CDMA2000 1X) equipped handsets to their subscribers to facilitate world wide roaming between their GSM networks and the Verizon CDMA network in the U.S.
13. Dell, HP-Compact, Toshiba, or Intel announce that their notebook computers will be designed to incorporate mobile wireless connectivity exclusively using CDMA2000 1X and 1X EV-DO technology as they see no immediate need to incorporate WCDMA.
