re: A TDsCDMA Primer

Steve, I'm not sure you catch my main thrust.

The big "fear" being rolled around by the industry press is that China carriers will choose (or be compelled) to build TDsCDMA voice+data networks in lieu of cdma2000 or wCDMA networks. Bear in mind that voice remains (and will remain) the primary driver of wireless services.

The big "fear" being rolled around by the industry press is that China carriers will build their primary voice+data networks with a technology that was designed specifically for asymmetric data delivery and is, by all appearances, antithetical to the provision of (symmetric) voice services - a technology that IPWireless states will "support data only". Bear in mind as well that customers are most particular about the quality of voice calls. And where latency (pauses) are acceptable for the delivery of data, it is anathema with voice. For carriers, voice Quality of Service (QoS) is supreme.

Further, the big "fear" being rolled around by the industry press is that China carriers will build their primary voice+data networks with a data-centric technology that also requires a much higher density of cell stations, multiplying network costs.

My main thrust is that, in my view, the "threat" of TDsCDMA (or UTRA-TDD) being used by any carrier for its primary voice+data network does not exist.
