That's very strange. So much of our literary criticism is Biblical in nature. I think you should complain. Obviously the man has a right to be an existentialist and mention it. But he doesn't have the right (imo) to tell students not to use Biblical themes- unless, of course, those themes are not appropriate for the assignment. I can't think of any high school core literature that doesn't have some religious elements, and of course much of the literature was intentionally written with religious symbolism.
