Solar cells are not a freebee either. It takes lots of energy to make them. At a recent meeting my understanding was that during the lifetime of a high quality solar cell, which is about 20 years, it produces only a few times its total cost in energy.

My plan -- make the energy from volcanoes and geothermal. That should be nearly eternal. We got the volcanoes not the mid-east. Hawaii needs a purpose besides being a vacation spot for the USA and Japan. So why not make hydrogen.
