You are quite the connoisseur of New Left publications. While I was a subscriber to Ramparts, I've never even heard of Avant Garde before your post.
My tastes ran toward a more practical political bent. Besides Ramparts, I also subscribed to I.F. Stone's Weekly, The New Republic and one you may get a kick out of this outlier..... Commentary.
BTW, Robert Scheer, one of my favorites from the Ramparts editorial staff can be heard on "Left, Right and Center", one of the best of the political radio shows in the country. Other regulars include David Frum, a very au courant auteur this week and Arianna Huffington, celebrating a twofer, her new book on your favorite people, "Pigs at the Trough", is in the bookstores this week, and her anti-SUV ad campaign has made quite a splash in the great cultural wasteland of television.
