MII says reports China to issue 3G licence this year 'inaccurate' - report

AFX - Asia
January 13, 2003 Monday

BEIJING; The Ministry of Information Industry has denied that third generation mobile network licences will be issued this year, the South China Morning Post reported citing MII spokesman Wang Lijian. Earlier reports quoted Ma Min, a divisional head in the MII's technology department, as saying that China would probably issue licences this year. Howewver, Wang told the paper "these reports were inaccurate", although the daily said he did not clarify whether this referred to the timing or the way the information was disclosed. Wang declined to say yesterday whether China would delay 3G until next year. "I have already said what I need to. What you are asking is your interpretation." The paper said outgoing MII minister Wu Jichuan signalled the delay of 3G technology in China late last year.
