Al, <Rangel's DOA proposal, of course, was in large part political gamesmanship: Members of Congress, he was suggesting, might be less gung-ho about invading Iraq if their own sons and daughters faced a call to arms.>

Military folk tend to be much more conservative than the mainstream, i.e. they support Bush's policies over that of the "bleeding heart" liberals.

Rangel's theories just don't jive with reality.

Note that you are misreading what the author said. Rangel knows that the military is disproportionately staffed in the lower ranks from the poorer classes of society. His point is different than the way you read it. The perception is that the Reps are better defense guardians, which is perceived in the lower ranks to mean that a republican administration is likely to "take better care of the military" You do not find that same level of understanding in the officer ranks, who know that what it really means is that the Republicans are better hawks on the backs of the poor, a greater number of which join the military for lack of alternatives. Hence the expression "chicken hawks" and Rangel's tactics.
