Hi Lizzie - From a previous article I posted it states than SUNW had a previous relationship with Qlogic. Perhaps now with the Brocade Rhasopdy pending merger, Sunw will now buy (and support) switches from Brocade rather than Qlogic. From what I can tell, Brocade continues to support many legacy installations and it appears that Sunw's Pirus networks virturalization "front end" design is flexible enough to seamlessly work with these static (legacy type) fabric switches. As a bonus, Brocade provides it's installed base an upgrade path to VSAN with it's Rhasopdy products. Perhaps SUNW sees Brocade's huges installed base as another major market for them to upgrade into their new enterprise N1 storage system. It's hard to say exactly what Sunw's long term storage solution plan is as it seems like it has changed course several times over the last few years.

"...Sun hasn't revealed the details of its stock-for-stock deal to buy Pirus, which is due to close by the end of the year, but the amount paid has been reported as $160m. Pirus had about 120 staff and had raised $55m since it was formed in late 1999. Despite the similarities between Pirus and Rhapsody, Sun says it's not interested in going after the general-purpose switch market. Pirus buys it a virtualization front end for multivendor storage arrays. For switches, Sun has a close relationship with QLogic..."
