Prison seems to be closer to university and graduate education for criminals than reform.

The idea that people should be imprisoned for crimes is fairly recent, dating back to the late 1700's. Prior to that, punishment was largely floggings, branding, stocks, pillory, sometimes transportation to a prison colony, and execution. Previous to the prison system, the number of crimes that had capital punishment was much larger.

The prison originated and grew in the US. The first was in Pennsylvania; Eastern State Penitentiary.

Prisoners were isolated and not allowed to talk- -basically what we would now call solitary confinement. The idea was that they should contemplate their crimes and motivations and correct their character and come out reformed. Do penance; hence penitentiary.

Doesn't seem to work.
