33.6K modems still best-sellers

In the meantime, many customers are opting for 33.6K-bps modems,
though upgradeability remains a concern for them. Modems at that
speed from 3Com/U.S. Robotics are software-upgradeable to 56K
(for a $60 charge), but the majority of modems based on Rockwell
Semiconductor's chips-including Motorola, Zoom Telephonics and
Boca Research-require a hardware upgrade.

"It's a tremendous advantage for USR," said Will Strauss, an
analyst with Forward Concepts, Tempe, Ariz. A Rockwell spokeswoman
said the company could offer software-upgradeable chips, but "hasn't
felt a clamor from consumers for one" as of yet.
