Little is surer than that the death penalty does not deter murder in society. There are legitimate reasons for people to support the death penalty (such as making guilty people pay the price is worth the death of innocent people). I do not believe this but as an opinion it could be argued. However, the lack of deterrence is not an opinion but a fact which has been borne out by countless studies which may be accessed on the web.
