what do you think of Lapid? when I was over there in '01 I had a long chat with him and got along famously. I had never met him before and didn't really know much about him--the meeting was arranged by a mutual friend at the US Embassy--but we spent two hours or so shmoozing about a vast range of stuff, from the movie "Sunshine" to interwar Europe to current politics. At least with me, he was nothing like the blowhard I've heard people describe. Instead, he was a very recognizable type of older Jewish guy: smart, knowledgeable, opinionated, colorful, very funny in a wry, biting kind of way. He's had a fascinating life, and was interested in straightforward, no-BS talk about all sorts of stuff.
