I'm certain Bush has his staff working overtime on every trick they can think of to provoke the Iraqis.

Fortunately there are now plenty of Western observers with video cameras in Iraq, as well as the Islamic media such as al Jazeera that will cover any deliberate U.S. provocation and make it much less likely to succeed in galvanizing American opinion than would have been the case, for instance, during the Viet Nam era. The Bushies have much less room to deceive today than previous Administrations because the level of skepticism is so high. However, they have countered with the most obnoxious secrecy regime that the American democracy has ever been forced to endure. A never ending escalation of secrets, lies and distrust on all sides. Except for someone like me, who says it is time to totally open up the Federal government to inspection by the American public.
