Rather remarkably, the Korean Government - the MIC - is intent on stifling cdma2000 evdo services to the advantage and promotion of wCDMA. This includes both government subsidized handsets and rates. They are consciously working to limit the success of evdo.

Probably a result of them seeing none of the major US carriers going with EV-DO. The public comittments to EV-DO are few and far between right now.

I still think that Verizon's comments may just have been laying the groundwork for their coming Northcoast spectrum acquisition....but they havent mentioned EV-DO since that conference a month ago. A change in tune by them and Unicom might cause Korea to rethink their position.

This could definitely hurt EV-DO sales between now and June....consumers may want to wait to buy a subsidized W-CDMA handset (subject to availability <g>). Of course, any W-CDMA handsets in Korea are very likely going to be based on Q's chipsets, so long-term W-CDMA subsidies wouldnt be a bad thing for Qualcomm.

Somebody has to get the damn standard to work....
