I started with a regular Schwab account and used their Street Smart software (non-Internet dial-up electronic trading). When e.Schwab came out, I transferred my shares to that (no charge for the initial transfer, $5 per security for subsequent transfers). Getting the Internet account (just a password) was a phone call.

At $30 a trade for up to 1,000 shares, it's cheap. Some low priced stocks up the comission percentage. I put in a limit order for 1000 shares of a $3 stock and only 100 got filled. I learned after that 10% comission to place "all or none" limits on these buys, or change them to market orders before close (commision is charged on Good Till Canceled once each day their is a trade placed, so you would pay one comission even if there are five trades to fill your order on the same day).

IF you don't need a broker to make your decisions (and I have never met one that has given me good advice).

The only problem is, it's cheap enough that I often trade more than I should.

When I started trading electronically, there were not a lot of choices, but I'm not sure that I would trust some of these new ones. Are they affiliated with known brokerage houses? Since the market has done so well, my little nut has grown. I'm not sure I would trust it to just anyone. I feel confident in a well known name like Charles Schwab. Hope that didn't sound too much like an advertisement.

Hope you find something better. Have heard a lot of complaints about e-trade...
