You've both stumbled into a very interesting subject. Here's a tremedously interesting book, though I'm not so sure of the science behind it. julianjaynessociety.tripod.com In brief, he theorizes that our ancestors did not experience the world as we do. They were in many respects essentially unconscious. The brain's right hemisphere dominated. Only after this bicameral brain broke down did consciousness,as we know it, begin. When their left brain "spoke", it was interpreted as the speech of the gods! I'm simplifying a lot. This book deserves to be studied minutely. Highly recommended.
