Yes. Challenges 'unique' to the times... because technology has made certain things possible - or on the edge of possibility - that would have surprised even George Orwell.

Power must be balanced with counter-power. (The most brilliant insight of our founders... but even they feared that success at keeping our freedoms might prove illusory). And freedom is always diminished for the best of expedient reasons.

The 'present emergency' is always the excuse given... but changes in government's powers (funny how power always seems to accrue to government... never the other direction) tend to be 'forever', so it behooves us to be careful in granting far-reaching new powers to government... especially in knee-jerk reaction to temporary conditions.

We maintained most of our freedoms throughout the perils of WW II and the Cold War... is our current challenge any greater, or more dangerous than those?
