Brooks-PRI Introduces Biotechnology's Most Complete, Integrated, Fully Automated Molecular Biological Workstation

Tuesday January 14, 5:00 pm ET

Parallab(TM) reduces costs and increases flexibility while simplifying the processing of biological samples.

CHELMSFORD, Mass., Jan. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Brooks-PRI Automation, Inc. (Nasdaq: BRKS - News), which delivers total automation for semiconductor manufacturing, today announced that its Life Sciences Group has developed the breakthrough Parallab workstation for use in biotechnology research applications. Parallab integrates innovative patent pending technologies that result in previously unrealized low cost per sample, high precision performance, functional flexibility and unattended miniaturized sample processing not attainable on any existing platform.

At the core of this technology is the Nano-Pipettor (NP), which processes 96 reactions in parallel and suits numerous biological applications. Using only nanoliters of reagents per reaction, Parallab can aspirate, mix, thermal cycle, purify and dispense product completely ready for analysis. The NP is then decontaminated and sterilized for repetitive, reproducible operation. This critical decontamination process allows continuous reuse of the NP, thereby eliminating the high consumable costs normally incurred with single use disposables in conventional platforms.

Dr. Steve Gordon, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Life Sciences Group at Brooks-PRI Automation, states, "We have brought together over a dozen technology innovations in this new product. The resulting integrated robotic system is unique in its ability to process tiny samples with very high precision. The key to the system is that once we get hold of a liquid sample, we never let it go, nor let it evaporate. Our Parallab product has exactly what the Genomics industry has been looking for but heretofore unable to buy."

Parallab is the only product in the market that offers the combined benefits of nanoliter volume liquid transfer, reduced consumables and extensive application flexibility. In addition to its small volume liquid handling technologies, Parallab also uses a proprietary high-speed thermal cycler that greatly reduces the time required to process each sample, thereby increasing the daily sample throughput. Unlike other products that perform only certain functions of Parallab, this unique system integrates multiple processes into one compact, fully automated robotic system. The combination of operations into one platform eliminates the need for other instruments and reduces the use of costly laboratory real estate.
