Charleymane,

Got any URLs on this? This is interesting information. Eric Alterman of MSNBC's Altercation considers I.F. Stone to be a hero of truthful investigative journalism. As you can probably tell, so do I.

A smear campaign to paint him as a "red" would be totally typical of the vicious and dishonest Right. Just another episode of hysterical McCarthyism would be my conclusion without actual proof of this contention.

Stone wrote facts that contradicted the official government lies of Viet Nam era. Since the government has and had absolutely no compunction about lying for effect, why should this contention about Stone be any more believable than, say, the government's arguments in favor of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution? A document we both know today was based on phony evidence.

Why would the government lie about the purposes for the Viet Nam War and tell the truth about Stone exposing them as liars? Logic would have it that they would be consistent and that rumors about Stone being an agent must be disinformation.

Our government, after all, does spend hundreds of millions of dollars annually on disinformation or bluntly, lying to the American public and publics across the globe.
