oh and the other thing i noticed...

laptop #2 AND laptop #3 are both doing this...

when you boot up, you will hear a sound in the hard drive...i described it to dell as "chatter"...and the tech there told me he also believed it was the xp software causing that...as if it is getting "stuck" ...but so far it is booting up ok.

my son has had a number of problems with xp on his machine too...but he pushes the system capabilities pretty much to the max with the programs he is running.

i remember now that someone else had recommended aloha bob...thank you for your help, tc.
