Oh, don't get me wrong - I agree with you completely on that. Nevertheless, it's a good option to have&#133 if Hammers are a smash&#133 so to speak (sorry).

I don't think their sales volumes or UMC's process capabilities will justify it.

There are more complex issues at work here. AMD has a lot of motivation (even now that their technology alliance is dead) to make UMC capable of producing competitive chips. Even to the point of virtually giving the process technology away, IMHO.

Right now, AMD only has one single fab. A freak accident (or act of terror, although Dresden isn't exactly an obvious choice for that) could completely wipe out AMD's ability to produce processors for months. The place was nearly flooded not too long ago and although the safeguards in place make the risk very, very small&#133 it's still significant compared to the risks of any major disruption to Intel's production apparatus.

For that reason alone, AMD might be willing to partially subsidize a UMC foundry deal.

Of course, all this requires that a UMC fab could actually be converted to something close to Dresden quality.
