Frost & Sullivan Names Nextel Communications Mobile Communications Company of the Year
Business Wire - January 15, 2003 09:04

RESTON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 15, 2003--

Carrier Recognized for Overall Excellence, Growth Potential Among
Wireless Service Providers; Strong Performance in 2002 Puts Nextel
Above the Competition

Nextel Communications Inc. (NASDAQ:NXTL) today announced that it would receive Frost & Sullivan's Mobile Communications Company of the Year award for exceptional performance among wireless carriers.

The annual award, which is given to the mobile service provider with the most significant opportunities for future growth as well as demonstrated leadership in the wireless industry, will be presented this evening in Scottsdale, Arizona at the Excellence in Information and Communication Technology Awards.

"Nextel is honored by this award, and by the recognition that we're making tremendous strides at all levels within a challenging industry," said Nextel VP of Enterprise Solutions Ernie Cormier, who will accept the award on Nextel's behalf. "With solid performance in the past, and a very bright future, we're going to continue to lead the industry in developing wireless voice and data solutions for the mobile enterprise."

Among the specific criteria used by Frost & Sullivan to determine final competitor rankings for this award are exhibited leadership in subscriber quality, customer retention, and subscriber/revenue growth rates. In the third quarter of 2002, Nextel led the industry with average monthly service revenue per domestic subscriber at $71 and customer churn at approximately 2 percent.

Both metrics are significantly ahead of other tier-one mobile operators in North America.

"We believe that Nextel's success in providing mobile professionals with innovative wireless business solutions is tied directly to its leading-edge technology and best-of-breed strategic partnerships," said Brent Iadarola, an analyst at Frost & Sullivan. "Nextel's ability to attract the most loyal and high-spending customers in the industry relates directly to their data solutions, Java(TM) capabilities, and the evolution of Direct Connect(TM)."
