I think those who act reasonably responsibly ought to be spared the cost of a lightning strike. If you're not promiscuous, you use a reliable form of birth control, and pay enough attention to recognize your pregnancy early, you should not have to carry a child to term let alone raise it or pay for it's raising.
But what about those who are carelessly promiscuous figuring that if they get pregnant they'll just get an abortion, and that's prefereable to messing with condoms or taking the pill? I don't know about your community, but my daughters had a number of friends who thought very much that way. Abortion was their only birth control option. One particularly egregious case was a friend of theirs who had four abortions before she graduated from high school.
For a segment of the young, I don't know how large, this IS the use of abortion. And given the number of abortions performed in the US each year -- up to 1.6 million a year, 300 abortions for every 1,000 live births, according to one site -- lightening strikes a pretty amazing number of times. It's hard to imagine that all, or even the bulk of those people, are not promiscuous and are using a reliable form of birth control. |
