A new study suggests it may be possible to determine in advance which women will benefit most from taking the drug Tamoxifen to prevent breast cancer.

npr.org

The important thing in this story is not some hope for cancer victims. The real story is in the process of bringing this drug to this point in the study. In a large study the drug showed no beneficial results. That didn't stop the drug company, they just resorted the data until they found some combination of factors that correlated with good results. Now they claim the drug may be useful for that subset of women. Of course once approved for any reason, the drug can be prescribed for all reasons whether it is safe and effective, or not.

This is one avenue to increasing health care costs.
