One possibility, of course, is that if they realized they had to carry the kid to full term and raise it, they would be more careful. Might not work.

But in terms of minor children, of course we make the parents/grandparents responsible. If they knew they would be on the hook for financially raising another child, they might do a better job looking after their child.

I know all the problems with these possibilities.

The basic issue is that we are encouraging irresponsibility. Breaking the link between act and consequence.

And the more places we do that, the worse off society becomes.

The what-then is a legitimate question. But sometimes life sucks, and should.
