Good evening folks. As some who have been here awhile know I am rather pessimistic on the drug industry in general and most biotechs in particular for reasons posted previously and not necessary repeating. Now and again something comes up that catches my eye. Today a young rep from GlaxoSmithkline came into my office to mention his herpes drug which I usually do not prescribe. I had a minute and asked him what else he was detailing since I had plenty of samples of the migraine drug Imitrex about which he usually comes calling (not worth a crap as a migraine drug orally for most folks, poorly absorbed, Maxalt or Zomig being in general far superior)...he brought out his Avodart being marketed just this week in my neck of the woods. Folks this drug could well put most urologists out of business with the way in shrinks prostate tissue. The studies are impressive. But here is the catch: Avodart inhibits BOTH isoenzymes that convert testosterone to DHT, the hormone metabolite that 1) inhibits prostate hypertrophy and 2) inhibits hair loss. That gives me pause to give GSK a second look. I believe they have a billion+/year blockbuster here...just a heads up for those who follow the drug industry. As disclaimer I hold stock in neither Merck nor Glaxo at this time BUT receive only $US 1.5 million for this plug. (Not as much as we got for Loral or Globalstar is it Mq?) Smile everyone! I said nothing about...that...that... that religion.
