I remember you telling me about the first one you read. Those horrific 3rd World conditions in East St. Louis are really burned into my brain. This is the legacy of unregulated heavy industry. The people in Colorado have to deal with the pollution of mining, but it is nothing compared to the abject poverty AND toxics left in the wake of various periods of industrial development along those forgotten stretches along the Mississippi mudflats.
