Unless a country faces a protracted mortal danger that requires a standing military of several million combat soldiers, there is no good reason anywhere for conscription. Some European countries use brief conscription more as an enforced way to train reservists.

But diverting billions of dollars to train and equip millions of young people who should be learning real life skills and beginning to contribute to the economy is basically stupid.

The rah-rah "let's make a man out of them" argument is crap.
