Those old clay pipes just kind of disintegrated over the years. Bubonic comes from rats doesn't it? Perhaps the old house had some rats around when he started his project. Had a guy that works for me get a virus from mouse shit that almost killed him. Turns into like that flesh eating bacteria thing. Scary stuff.
