Indeed I do plead guilty to accepting your correction of my late night wording as an unpleasant reminder of my faltering mind late nights these days. I should have reread and checked the wording. The drug indeed inhibits the growth of prostate tissue by inhibiting an enzyme and probably, since it acts in a similar manner with the other isoenzyme that converts testosterone to DHT, prevents hair loss. They CANNOT say that or even nod silently in agreement without risking the heavy hand of the FDA ( but he grinned silently). Ah, and an additional confession is due, remembered from last night, so intense the energy to refrain from mentioning....that...that religion that I paid not enough attention to the wording of the mesage itself. To your "gotcha," say I "yep, ya did". The comments regarding the potential of a multiyear blockbuster drug stand unchanged. I should also add that to my query of what else was in the pipeline the rep told me that this summer they have coming out a competitor to Viagra that has no cardiac effects and works with a latency of 5 minutes instead of Viagra's 30 minutes. I have not researched the GSK website but it sounds like a lucrative product(duh, now that is a ludicrously low understatement. Some of my patients will be in frenzy or in dogs I would say...heat. By those patients I mean those who have nothing wrong with them in "that direction"= human nature). As far as side effects of Avodart, included are impotence, inability to ejaculate, percentages less than 5% with most people with the side effects saying they disappeared with prolonged use of the drug ~3 months or more. As with any drug that inhibits conversion of testosterone to DHT there is a contraindication in people with prostate cancer.
I keep looking at historical pe's of drug companies about 16-22 and at ~18 GSK does not look that expensive. I will never forget how stupid I felt later after a buddy of mine told me a year in advance of the approach of the release of Viagra. Hindsight! It works 20/15 everytime...damnit
