Dave,
An article in today's New York Time: "MacOS 8: Analysts see progress, if not breakthrough, for Apple", in which Kimball Brown, a personal computer analyst at Dataquest Inc, in San Jose, CA points out:
o Even if a portion of current Mac owner update, the new version still help Apple's quarterly earning considerably;
o It's clearly a nice upgrade. Realistically it's going to be a pop to earning;
o MacOS 8, along with new Macintoshes expected in the second half of the year, singals start of a successful upgrade cycle for Apple, which will help Apple become profitable by the fourth quarter.
Besides the above positive points, there are additional points that will also help Apple's current quarterly earning:
- It is a school's pre-opening quarter, which will make schools to rush in for newly upgrade OS, and most advanced hardware;
- It is hitting a cycle of Mac hardware/software updrading since 1993-1994;
- Continuing strong sales overseas, such as Japan and Europe;
- Complete layoff process, which will reduce another expense of 500 or so employees, which indirectly reduce operating costs in the current quarter;
- Additional revenue from new OS license fees paid by clones.
