louise,
Caught me before I could get off line. Sometimes it is hard to escape. ggg

re >I don't know how many will die. None, I hope. But if we execute the killer, one life will
DEFINITELY be lost. I don't think you can put lives on a scale. When you start thinking
one life is worth more than another ... well, I don't want to go down that road.<

IMO Any innocent life is worth more than a convicted murderer's but that wasn't my point. If the DP is a deterrent than it saves lives. If you ban the DP or otherwise hobble it's use those lives will not be saved. You are sacrificing innocents to avoid killing the guilty. This is a fact.

We put lives on a scale everyday, vaccines cost a few lives per million. The avoidance of disease and death for the 999,996 outweighs the side effects including death for the 4. (numbers pulled from hat, please don't jump me if I am off a bit) The convenience of personal mobility for millions outweighs the deaths of the 25 or 30 K who die from auto accidents. The earlier deaths of some terminal patients does not outweigh the FDAs concern with the safety of a promising new drug. We can disagree about where the proper balance is but the fact remains, lives are put on the scale every day.
