I'm not sure there was lack of interest. Mrs. Adams, for example, descried the prejudice she saw in her township against a young African American man who wanted to learn a trade. I belive Mrs. Adams helped him get the training he wanted. I think you do a great injustice to the people of our founding father's generation if you suggest there was a lack of interest. There may not have been a word for it, but there was interest, and there was action.
