I live in a cul-de-sac across a distinguished primary school. The location of the distinguished school district is priced in the house that we bought 4 years ago.

When the economy headed down, my cousin, who lived a block away from my place, pulled her two kids out of private schools and put them in the public school across my house, the 5.5 year old in grade 1 and the girl in grade 5.

She was amazed to find that they had 7 year old first graders there who couldn't write alphabets and numbers, far less read a book or write wish-letters to santa that her son used to do in Kindergarten <and my 4.5 year old now does in Kindergarten too>. The only way she could help him do better in class was by becoming a voluntary teaching aide for his class (a luxury she could afford since she had decided to be a stay at home mom till the youngest was through grade 3 - she's a doctor by profession).....but then she wondered what the hell she was doing paying 48% in taxes....?

And mind you, its a distinguished school in a upper middle income area of Silicon Valley - the brain-state of USA after NY.

The divergence between the best and the worst is horrendous imo.....
