Again, and again: the issue unable to pass into your mind, for reasons no doubt of "mainstream" brainwashing that disallows even the concept that some of our elected officials are in fact, NOT THE GOVERNMENT. The people are the gov't, and they elect officials, who appoint and hire other officals, some of whom are idiots, brainwashed functionaries, and, yes, even criminals...
To criticise, investigate, and question those people is to support the Constitution which they swear to uphold, and IS THE REASON this country is great. Otherwise any structure of check and balance between autocracy and democracy is meaningless.
To unquestioningly "follow the leader" is not only unworthy of any true American, it leads to ignorance, incompetence, malfeasance, and inevitable criminality. How can you tell? Look at the results: greater violence, crime and economic damage than anytime since WWII. That's either (a)'just the way it goes', or (b)the above list.
By slavishly following the "mainstream" you'll never know the difference.
Even Reagan's "Trust but verify" is waaaay outside your limited view. You refuse even to verify. That leads to disaster on one's personal, financial, and political life, and only works in spiritual matters -- you've clearly decided to make your politics faith-based.
