Caranzza, you wrote->>”On the other hand, take a look at this article in which Gartner Dataquest is quoted as saying that any GSM carrier that adopts GSM1x risks becoming isolated from lucrative GSM roaming deals. I don't necessarily follow the logic, but it seems to say that any carrier that adopts GSM1x would be cutting its own throat since it is probably more lucrative to charge roaming fees than to adopt GSM1x. Gartner may have a point, though the argument doesn't appear to consider the cost efficiencies that GSM1x would bring to the table.”

I don’t necessary follow Gartner’s logic either on this issue and many others over the years in which they have been quoted in response to questions regarding CDMA and Qualcomm. From their responses on many occasions I’m not sure they have much if any understanding of CDMA and Qualcomm. I originally interpreted their remark to mean GSM1X did not have the technical capability (which is untrue) to roam with other GSM carriers who had not upgraded to GSM1X. I emailed the author and Gartner and did not receive a response. Your take is “interesting” and could be correct. Too bad the journalist community covering wireless don’t know the right questions to ask.
