GSM1x supports GSM Map and the GSM backend but NOT the air interface, which is what a GSM only phone would need. I agree with Engineer that both systems could be supported if the carrier has the spectrum. However, to say that a GSM phone could roam on as GSM1x only network is incorrect. I'm not trying to spread FUD, only trying to shed some light on the author’s comments.
