Even after the tax increase deficits where projected out as far as the projections went. Then the Republican congress slowed the growth of spending and the deficits melted away. Unfortunately the Republicans have gotten away from the idea of reducing spending or even slowing its growth, and the Democrats don't even think about that idea much so now no one (or at least not party, or large powerful political group) is leading the charge to contain spending with the predictable result that we will probably have deficits for awhile.

With the current economic slowdown and the current foreign policy situation we would probably have deficits anyway but they would not have to be so large as they will be nor would we be in deficit for as many years.
