From the article:"...Under the agreement, the companies plan to expand their industry leading solutions to provide customers with policy-based automated management and provisioning of networked-based storage application services. Leveraging Rhapsody's rich XPath API and InterSAN's patented Virtual Private DataPath(TM) technology, InterSAN's SAM solution, PATHLINE(R) will automatically discover, monitor, and provision Rhapsody's intelligent fabric switches and enabled virtualization and replication services. InterSAN's VPD technology manages the relationship between applications, their data storage and everything in-between to abstract away the complexities of storage networking devices and services. The combined solution will deliver unprecedented, simplified and automated management of intelligent fabric-based services that enterprise customers are demanding. InterSAN software also supports Brocade, EMC, Hitachi Data Systems, and LSI Logic storage solutions..."

From many of the articles I have been reading, CSCO is working with Veritas to utilize their enterprise storage management software. "...With Cisco Systems , Veritas said it has entered in a strategic relationship to aim for joint delivery of next-generation storage networking software..."

However, it turns out that Rhapsody Networks has been inking deals with several enterprise storage management software companies licensing components for their product. Veritas even has a deal in the works with Rhapsody Networks (http://siliconvalley.internet.com/news/article.php/1024551)
"...A partnership with Rhapsody Networks to incorporate Veritas storage virtualization software into Rhapsody's storage application director. The integration allows Rhapsody to provide customers with a wide range of software designed to simplify storage management..."

I get the feeling that Rhapsody's management has Veritas on their radar screen and they are in the back room building an enterprise software management suite that will compete head to head with Veritas. I think all they needed was an installed customer base (ie all those Brocade customers) where they could get some traction when they launch their new software suite. (Note: all speculation on my part but several of the pieces seem to be falling into place).

This merger could be a win-win for both companies if Brocade can surpass Veritas in installed software site applications. ...And now Brocade becomes a major software player too.
