I get the feeling that Rhapsody's management has Veritas on their radar screen and they are in the back room building an enterprise software management suite that will compete head to head with Veritas.

Given Vrts's installed base and management I really don't think a newcomer like rhapsody can compete... this is above and beyond the point that rhapsody is a hardware company and vrts is essentially a database software firm.

If rhapsody is doing some sort of enterprise/redundancy mgmt app, they might look to knockoff some of the weaker players (CA unicenter?)- because some of those exist solely as an alternative to a very expensive vrts solution but have no strengths of their own.

BRCD (and rhapsody) have a valuation 1/7 of vrts- I would say the best solution here would be for brcd to try a partnership with vrts rather than compete with them. Ordinarily, that would be unlikely due to the cisco/vrts deal. Except that vrts has such strong ties to oracle, with Gary Bloom as CEO (ex-Oracle) and Ellison has his own SAN startup in the works, VRTS might not want to limit themselves to just Cisco as a partner.
