Feature: US soldiers in Afghanistan a boon for local businessmen

Xinhuanet 2003-01-18 09:27:40

Bagram, North of Kabul, Jan. 18 (Xinhuanet) -- On every Friday afternoon, Abdul Gaforc drove his second-hand Toyota pick-up fullyloaded with carpets, handicrafts and fake antiques to try his fortune at a bazaar in Bagram, about 70 kilometers north of Kabul.

The weekly open-air bazaar was located in a dusty ground just outside the Bagram Airbase, where nearly 10,000 US Army and MarineCorps troops have been stationed since late 2001 when the US-led coalition forces entered Afghanistan to hunt down remnants of the terrorist al-Qaeda network and its patron, Taliban.

"These American soldiers have so much money with them that it'seasy to sell any kind of luxury goods to them," said Gaforc, 34, an Afghan businessman who run a handicraft shop in downtown Kabul."It's a golden opportunity for me," he said.
