I believe that ATM vs Gigabit Ethernet is a false choice. I
think that they both have too many flaws for use in the LAN to
the desktop. I believe that in the end Fibre Channel will dominant
the LAN's of the future that require at least 1 gps to the desktop.

Fibre Channel has established a beachhead in the storage side
of the LAN (FC is replacing SCSI for storage.) This will provide
the economies of scale needed to compete against Gigabit Ethernet.
Fibre Channel has already solved all the problems that GE is having
great difficulty with (ie. scalability, quality of service).

In Japan they have pretty much decided that FC in the LAN and
ATM in the WAN is the way to go in the future. They are now building
large Fibre Channel networks (hundreds of FC switches with thousands
of nodes). In the United States, there are now dozens of small FC
networks and EDS is looking at moving away from Gigabit Ethernet
plans and is starting to adopt Fibre Channel in a big way. They
want to mainstream FC since they see too many problems with
ATM and Gigibit Ethernet in the LAN. Later this year, Ancor
Communications will be coming out with their next generation
1 gbs FC switch that is rumored to bring the cost per port well
below the cost per port of Gigabit Ethernet. That is when the
sea change to Fibre Channel in the LAN will really begin.

All IMHO,
Steve
