If we really mean it, it won't be cheap. There are a lot of children out there who need services and are not getting them. I think most of our high school drop outs are dropping out because they aren't getting services they need.
I think "Leave no child behind" sounds great. But it's a huge commitment, and it will require money. Education is not a magical area where money is meaningless. I am always amused by people who say money is not the answer (i'm sure you've heard this from people, and it makes me ROFL), because, it is a big part of the answer (as it is with any problem. If you can pay enough, you can make almost any problem go away; if you don't believe that, just ask OJ). If we had an unlimited budget we could tempt the best and the brightest into teaching, instead of relying on idealists, like myself, who forgo other lucrative careers in favor of teaching. I am amazed at how many idealists there are, quite frankly, but we still have a teacher shortage, especially in math and science.
As you say, time will tell. |
