Billings Lake: Late May

The weather sweetens--
the surface of the lake
is pocked with castings of oak,
and laurel offers up
handfuls of sticky bloom.
A jangle--
the right key catches.
The door swings
inward, and the cottage's
musty breath spills
over the steps with a moan.
Ashes from October's
fire scattered on the rug
as if the winter wind,
in search of a companion,
had put its icy lips
to the chimney
and blew it like a whistle.
