California has changed the penalty process substantially. Gone are the days of pleading down to lesser offenses. The system is now very regimented and some lawyers even suggest that hiring an attorney is pointless (particularly for first offense). There's very little they can do except show you where to sign your paperwork. The fine is $1100, mandatory school (special DUI program, not standard traffic school) &#151 22 weeks. You pay for the school &#151 another $1100. 3-yr. probation. Second offense is a very steep increase on the above.
