hap- i unjoy* the poetry of her songs more than them strung together in music....* issat a pun or a typo? my appreciation of poetry is limited. i prefer music but my appreciation of music is also limited. mixing music with lyrics is a mixed-media art. it requires a multi-talented artist or multiple artists collaborating on a work. given the whole body of that art that's ever been produced, i like far less than one percent of it. i unjoy a hell of a lot more than i enjoy of poerty, music, AND music with lyrics... but it is an exquisite treat to hear a song with fabulous lyrics and fabulous, complimentary music. there's a synergy that makes it more than the sum of its parts. when that song is performed by talented, expressive performers... it's magic! i'm trying to think of an example... "Vincent" by Don Mclean comes very close, except i don't agree with the conclusion... "this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you" it's a baldface lie! that's exactly what this world was made for... treasure hunting. <g> but maybe don is being sarcastic?? if so, then he should sing the last line baldfacedly, no? lemme try to find another example... where the music and the lyrics both stand alone as beautiful works... but combined are ever more powerful than the sum. (this is not easy to do while watching football) <g> "After All" by Dar Williams on "The Green World" "I Want You" performed by Cliff Eberhardt on "Nod to Bob" "Have I Told You Lately" by Van Morrison "I Can't Make You Love Me" by Bonnie Raitt "Sunlight" by Jessie Colin Young "One Particular Harbor" by Jimmy Buffett "This Old Porch" by Lyle Lovett "My Buddy" performed by Jerry Jeff Walker "Dead Skunk In The Middle Of The Road" by Loudon Wainwright III "Step Right Up" "I Want You" and "Looking For The Heart Of Saturday Night" by Tom Waits hey... cool. i just made myself a new CD. just like life, this art stuff is great but the best part is the journey and the hunt. (meanwhile, the team i was rooting for has won) goody. -elpolvo
