Above and beyond toppling the regime of Saddam Hussein and dismantling its deadly weapons, the driving motivation of a new American endeavor in Iraq and in neighboring Arab lands should be modernizing the Arab world. The great indulgence granted to the ways and phobias of Arabs has reaped a terrible harvest – for the Arabs themselves, and for an America implicated in their affairs. It is cruel and unfair but true: the fight between Arab rulers and insurgents is for now an American concern.

A successful war in Iraq would embolden those who wish for the Arab world deliverance from retrogression and political decay.

America is the last best hope for the Arab world. The queasy feeling in my stomach would ease if George Bush were to upfront with the real motivation and justification for attacking Iraq. WMD makes the job of justifying the attack easier but it does not make the job of the occupation and rebuilding easier. Once America is attacked in retaliation, and it will be attacked, people will ask the obvious question: "We got the weapons, why are we still there?".

America is offering a message of hope to a region largely lacking in hope. The American people will respond if they are told what their mission is. If all Bush has to offer is an Adlai Stevenson 'show 'em the missiles' speech, he will have won the battle but lost the war. The cost of satisfying the mediocracy at the UN will have been fatal. Bush must give the world a vision of hope.
