A very good post, however, the overall essence: abx's hedging has locked it into a very small trading range limiting any gains for an investor. Why own it? There also remains the suspicion that the hedging techniques as described may not match the fine print of the contracts thereby hiding a possible time bomb of the type that ruined enron. Gold investors generally profit from the metals volatile pricing characteristics. Remove that variable and there is little reason to own a hedged producer that is locked into a tight trading range.
