There are more applicants than positions in places like the University of Michigan.

My daughter is filling out paperwork for grad school right now -- trying to get a graduate assistanceship. It says:

*Race

*You don't have to provide your race, but if you are minority and you do it may help you get an assistanceship.

Now, she's wanting to know, "I need that assistanceship as bad as anyone. Why should they give MY assistanceship to someone else just because they're a minority and I'm not?".

What should I tell her. She's waiting on an answer.
