With multimode handsets, why would Unicom be at all interested in spending CAPEX to upgrade its GSM networks to GSM1x? Why not spend it - as it has telegraphed it will - on expanding its 1x networks and upgrading to do? With multimode - the GSM network will work just find for low end services, and give everyone acces to higher level data over cdma. Are you comfortable taking the conjecture of a faceless group - that has been very consistently wrong about very nearly everything - as gospel?
